All the evil, pretty bottles

I loved the bottle shop. Dad said it’s our secret and don’t tell mum. It was fun having a secret.
Shelves of pretty bottles. Brown and amber, some green ones and lots with no colour.
What’s the point of that? Dad said it’s to do with the drink inside.
Dad bought lots of the ones you could see through, if the label wasn’t in the way.
Then Dad got poorly. In hospital he turned a funny orange colour.
One day Mummy said Dad’d gone to heaven and it’s all the fault of the bottle shop, so I hate it now.

  1. Thanks Sandra. I wonder if you can help me. I’m trying to comment on other’s stories but for some reason my comments are not getting through. I can reply as in this case but not comment directly, any ideas? I don’t think I’m doing anything differently to any other week.

  2. You have captured the child’s perspective perfectly. Sadly, secrets can have sinister consequences and the first time I read this I thought it was going in another direction entirely. Like others, I loved the voice in this :).
